Regular readers know I love all kinds of movies and while I may favor Horror/Sci-Fi/Fantasy films, I love a good drama; raunchy comedy; fabulous musical and even the occasional Rom-Com.
I am also well aware that there of plenty of LGBT films that fall into all of these categories. Among some of my past favorites: All Over the Guy; Big Eden: Hellbent; The Broken Hearts Club; Hedwig and the Angry Inch; The Wedding Banquet; The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; My Own Private Idaho; Psycho Beach Party, A Single Man and the magnificent Brokeback Mountain (among many others). Of those, only two have won Oscars: Priscilla for Best Costume Design and Brokeback for Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay (we all know Academy voters got scared and awarded Best Picture to the far inferior Crash). So it does my heart good to hear about at least two LGBT films this year that have Oscar potential.
The first is Beginners, starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer in tale about a young man (McGregor) dealing with his elderly father's (Plummer) admission that not only does he have terminal cancer, but he is also gay. Several friends have recommended this movie to me, but I have yet to see it.
The other film folks are talking about is Weekend, about two young Englishmen who meet and spend a single weekend together, talking and learning about one another in two days, after a chance encounter in a bar:
Trust me, I very much want to see both of these films, but living in the wilds of suburbia (where I've had many more encounters with so-called "straight boys" than I've had in the city with truly out "gay boys"), limits my ability to catch them on the big screen.
Of course, I could resort to renting the latest straight-to-DVD softcore gay Horror porn from David DeCoteau, A Dream Within a Dream (AKA: 1313 Nightmare Mansion):
I think I'll wait until the first two are available OnDemand, thanks.
More, anon.
Prospero
