Do You Hear The Wedding Sing?

"Congratulations On Your Wedding. I'm an Orphan of War."
Long time readers know how much your 'Funny Uncle" loves a really good, well-planned and smoothly executed flashmob. While many of the best ones seem to be musical in nature, Improv Everywhere stages all sorts of such events, mostly without music, throughout New York.

The big ones are professionally engineered, usually to promote something: The "Glee" flashmob in the Italian trains station; Gay Mardi Gras in Australia and this more recent Star Wars Theme orchestral flashmob promoting German (Austrian?) radio station WDR:

Today, among all the gun control arguments and ridiculous religious-nut-with-Photoshop tributes and prayer requests and whatnot, my sweet friend Amanda posted the video below. While the description on YouTube makes it clear that the couple are Musical Theatre fans, but I have to wonder if this was the right song (or even show) for a wedding reception flashmob. Read the description and then watch the actually impressive video:

"The perfect wedding surprise for the musical-loving newlyweds Susanne and Sune Vibæk Svanekier on their wedding on May 26 2012 at the Workers' Museum in Copenhagen."

First of all, many of those folks are actually good singers and their English is excellent. It's obvious that these folk rehearsed and rehearsed for the number and the couple (particularly the groom - watch for him "conducting") are really into it.  I just have to question the use of a song from one of the saddest musicals of all time; a song about preparing for battle, no less, in a wedding tribute. It's almost as bad as a DJ playing "Please Release Me." Now before you say nasty things - of course it is obviously the couple's favorite show. Of course it is appropriate for them. Should my lovely, creative and talented friends stage such a flashmob in the very unlikely event I got married, I think "You're the One That I Want" or something from "The Wedding Singer" or "Springtime for Hitler" or almost anything else than Les Miserables! Of course the fact that the movie is just over a week away from it's U.S. release doesn't hurt.

I posted both movie versions, just in case you want to prepare. Did you notice a gorgeous blond John Barrowman in the second version? I almost forgot Uma Thurman was in that movie, though Roger Bart's Carmen Ghia is almost as funny as the original's Andreas Voutsinas. Here are a few more numbers I don't suggest for a wedding:

No, at my wedding I want Big Dipper: (Most certainly NSFW):

Why I Regretfully Declined

I recently received an invitation to a friend's wedding. My friend is a talented actor and musician and I am truly happy for him and his bride-to be (whom I have only met twice). I responded with my "Regrets" to the invitation. Our mutual friend, Q, posted a message to my Facebook account - "So you are unavailable for ----'s wedding?"

My response to her was: "I have nothing to wear; no time or money to find something to wear and no one to bring as my 'Plus 1.' Besides, I usually hate weddings, They only serve to remind me of how alone I am."

Honestly, that's not to whine about being alone. It's just a simple fact. It's also true that I do not own a suit and haven't for at least 20 years. I hate suits. They represent everything I despise about Corporate America. That's not to say I haven't worn one in the past 20 years. I've donned several as costumes for various shows and/or events. I even wore a (rented) tuxedo for the JTMF 5th Anniversary Gala. But the thought of owning one just rankles me to my core -- I shouldn't (nor should you) be defined by the clothes I wear. Luckily, the Day Job allows me to wear jeans and even shorts to work (though I personally wouldn't be caught dead in public wearing a T-shirt).

But this isn't really about clothes. It's about pretending to be happy for two people who have decided to spend their lives together when I can't seem to find someone who wants to spend more than a few years or months with me. Is that selfish and childish? Maybe. But I don't care.I just can't bring myself to be happy about something I'm unlikely to ever have.

Now, don't go feeling sorry for me. Uncle P has long ago resigned himself to life alone. And it's not like I never had a long-term relationship. The relationships I've had were good while they lasted. And I haven't lacked for a sex life (TMI?). But the older I get, the more apparent it becomes that I am not meant to have a "soul-mate," whatever that means. And who knows... I may have yet to meet the man with whom I will spend the rest of my life in connubial bliss. Stranger things have been known to happen. Still - I'm a realist. I know that the likelihood of meeting someone at my age is slim-to-none. And I'm okay with that. At least, I think I am. And I'm certainly not lacking for love. I have several very dear friends (Q, K, Dale, Tracy and D, among others) who love me very much (as I do them).

If you are lucky enough to share your life with a special someone, please don't take that for granted, If, like me, you have yet to find that special someone, take solace in the fact that you not alone. And that's okay. Not every pot has a lid, despite what my grandmother used to say.

There's Still Hope...

Yesterday's Royal Pain in the Ass Wedding broke the hearts of millions of hopeful princesses around the world. But that doesn't mean they should despair. There are still plenty of attractive, wealthy and single royals to stalk pursue...

To your left is the rather amazingly gorgeous Carl Philip, Prince of Sweden. The soon-to-be 32 year-old son of King Carl XVI Gustav and Queen Silvia is undoubtedly Europe's hottest royal bachelor and still unattached. He has previously been romantically linked to PR maven Emma Pernald and model Sofia Helqvist. Of course, Uncle P and several of my Facebook friends wouldn't mind if we were romantically linked with Carl Philip.

Then there's 24 year-old cutie-pi,e Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark. There isn't much to tell about the baby-faced Prince, who attended Georgetown University, among several colleges. If Philippos is a bit too young, there's always 27 year-old Prince Amedeo of Belgium. Currently working at Deloitte in NYC, Amedeo has managed to keep a rather low profile, as well.

Not good enough? There are always Princess Grace's grandsons. The sons of Princess Caroline of Monaco, Pierre and Andrea Casiraghi are 23 and 26, respectively. Rich, single and the descendants of an American actress who married well, Pierre and Andrea have done a much better job of staying out of the tabloids than their mother and aunt.  If their uncle, Prince Albert II (whom I always assumed was gay) does not produce a legitimate heir with his fiance, South African swimmer Charlene Wittstock, then Andrea will assume the throne.

And lets not forget William's brother, Prince Henry "Harry" of Wales. The ginger lad has developed a reputation as a hell-raiser of sorts, having infamously appeared in a Nazi uniform at a Halloween party and licking a mate's nipple during a drunken revel... The closest any gay man might get to the House of Windsor, Harry has had an on-again/off-again relationship with the rather skanky-looking socialite Chelsy Davy, a beard if ever I saw one...

Last, but not least, there's Sheik Rashed bin Mohammed, the 28 year-old Prince of Dubai. Worth over $12B (yes, Billion), the young Arabian prince is not only adorable, but athletic and the heir to the throne of one of the richest countries on Earth. Damn!

While it is highly unlikely that you or I will ever even meet these bachelor princes, we can all dream, right? As the long-defunct drive-through franchise Photomat once promised - Someday, my prints will come... Wait. Wut? That may well be the worst joke I've ever posted. Oh, wait - there's still this:

Go to bed, Sleeping Beauty. Prince Charming isn't coming, the wedding is over and you weren't invited...
