Genetics, Pain, Sinusitis and a Possible Remedy

I have full sympathy for anyone who suffers from chronic pain. Genetics have left Uncle P with several chronic conditions, the worst of which is chronic sinusitis. A sinus headache can put me down for an entire day or more, as it did today.

After downing some medication and using a nasal spray along with a saline spray to relieve congestion, I slept most of the day and still felt awful until about an hour or so ago when the pressure, pain and congestion finally started to break up. Those of you who suffer from this condition know exactly what I'm talking about. I don't get migraines, but totally understand how light and sound make the experience worse.

I have probably spent several thousand dollars over the years on products designed to relieve this condition (if one more person suggests that I use the completely ineffective Neti Pot, I will punch them in the nose) and I have learned that nothing but sleep, decongestants and anti-inflammitories do any good at all. One doctor I saw suggested surgery, while two others warned against it. An ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) specialist once told me that "...a 'sinus scraping' will only add to your misery."

I am plagued by a sinus headache at least once a month and any time there is a seasonal aberration, I am hit by one like the one that put me down today. Today's 20+ difference in temperature and a surprising increase in barometric pressure add up to a "perfect storm" and send my sensitive sinuses into full attack mode.

I hope none of you suffer from the kinds of sinus issues I have. If you do, my heart goes out to you. I literally feel your pain. I may take this Scottish lady's advice, if I can find the stuff:

If I find the ingredients and they work, I'll let you know.

More, anon

I Hate My Head

Uncle P had plans for a wonderful weekend of revelry and fun with friends he loves dearly. Last night I was planning on attending a combination Halloween/Birthday party for one of my Top Girls cast members and tonight I was supposed to see a ridiculous Horror movie with Matty.

Needless to say, none of those plans met with fruition, thanks to my fickle sinuses, which decided to inflame themselves to the point of no return. Along with the nasal congestion and explosive pain, my left eye swelled almost shut and felt as though it wanted nothing less than total escape from its socket. And I tried everything from warm compresses to saline eye washes. I even improvised a neti pot using an old watering can. Nothing helped.

As I write this, the infection seems to have switched sides, inflaming the right side of my skull with its insidious horrors. And while it is far from my intention to gross you out, those of you who don't suffer from the genetic curse of bad sinuses should count yourselves among the lucky. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy (though I'm not above wishing them a bad case of diarrhea). Of course, all this is just making you ask yourselves why I am sharing such disgusting details, but I am so consumed by them I can't write about anything else right now I hope you'll both forgive and sympathize (or maybe even empathize) with me.

And since I really have nothing pithy or political or remotely related to my usual topics to say tonight, I'll leave you with the trailers to two upcoming movies I really want to see:

Skyline opens this coming Friday.

Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch opens next March.

More, when I'm feeling better.
